Hooray for Autumn!
Hooray for Autumn!

Fall is definitely my favorite time of year! I like the crispness of the air, the colors of the leaves, the smell ... well, let's leave the smell out. I live behind a factory where they roast cocoa beans, so usually I smell chocolate. Mmmmm... The rest of the time -- I live in farm country, so there's often the smell of fertilizer (ewwww!). So back to fall and the weather. I love that when it's ready to snow there's a special feeling (yes, a smell!) in the air -- wait, did I just say SNOW?? OK, back up, it's way too soon for that.
I think what I like is the sense of change. Some endings, some beginnings, as in all cycles. The leaves fall and die, the trees shut down to brace for winter's cold. The gardens and flowers all prepare for the slow, cold creep of sleep before the newness of spring. The brisk feel in the air wakes up my senses after the dullness from the heat of summer. My thoughts turn to what's coming up. Cool air will turn to cold air, Jack Frost will be visiting soon. Preparations must be made. And then there's the holidays, lots and lots of holidays. That means lots of traffic, shopping, cooking, and then of course eating. Sharing precious time with friends and family.
That is the theme that I like best about this time of year. We seem to go out of our way to spend time with friends and family, where the rest of the year it's kind of hit or miss. If you show up in my space we will spend time together. Then around the holidays, that sense of urgency approaches and we make the time we didn't have before to get together. Is it the sense that the year will end and maybe bring other unexpected endings? Or that the procrastination of the rest of the year seems too much to handle so we do things instead of putting them off? Whatever the reason, it makes the seasons changing more bearable, finding joy in the continuing cycles of life.
Make your Autumn memorable this year!
